There are numerous speculations surrounding the name "Brzeźno".[1] According to one, the word "Brzeźno" was the name of a lake, with thepossessive suffix-no, added tobrzoza (birch). Thus, the name of the lake derives from birch trees surrounding its waters. The lake was located by the settlement namedPrusęcino (deriving from theOld Prussians that lived there). It is believed that Prusęcino changed its name toBresno (first noted in 1323). Due to the double-meaning of the nameBresno, the name of the lake was changed toZaspa. The other hypothesis for the naming of the settlement derives from the wordbrzeg (Polish:coast), in regards to the coastal location of Brzeźno.[2]
Brzeźno was a private church village of theabbey inOliwa, administratively located in the Gdańsk County in thePomeranian Voivodeship of the Kingdom of Poland.[3]
