Bryce Christopher Young (born July 25, 2001) is an American professionalfootballquarterback for theCarolina Panthers of theNational Football League (NFL). He playedcollege football for theAlabama Crimson Tide, setting the school record for most passing yards in a single game (559) and winning several player of the year awards in 2021, including theHeisman Trophy. Young was selectedfirst overall by the Panthers in the2023 NFL draft.
Young was born on July 25, 2001, inWynnewood, Pennsylvania.[1][2] He later moved toPasadena, California, where he lived for most of his adolescence.[3][4] Young attendedCathedral High School in Los Angeles and transferred toMater Dei High School inSanta Ana, California, in 2018.[5]
As a senior, he was theLos Angeles Times Player of the Year and California'sGatorade Football Player of the Year after throwing for 4,528 yards and 58 touchdowns.[6][7] He was also theUSA Today High School Offensive Player of the Year.[8] During his high school career he passed for 13,520 yards and 152 touchdowns and was a five star recruit ranked the nation's #1 quarterback prospect and second overall recruit.[9][10] After originally committing toUSC to play football, Young instead decided to play atAlabama.[11][12]
Young has been friends withHouston Texans quarterbackC. J. Stroud since the two went to nearby high schools in Southern California. The two continued their friendship in college, and ultimately were selected with the first two picks in the2023 NFL draft.[13]

During his freshman year at Alabama, Young was the backup to junior quarterbackMac Jones throughout the2020 season. On September 26, 2020, Young made his collegiate debut in the late third quarter againstMissouri atFaurot Field. That night, Young went 5-of-8 for 54 passing yards with two rushing yards on four attempts.[14] On November 21, he threw his first collegiate touchdown pass in a 63–3 victory overKentucky.[15] Young appeared in nine games in 2020, finishing the season with 156 passing yards and one touchdown.[16]

On September 4, 2021, Young made his debut as the Crimson Tide's starting quarterback.[17] In a 44–13 win over the #14Miami Hurricanes, he passed for 344 yards and four touchdowns.[18]
On November 20, againstArkansas, Young threw for 559 yards to break the Alabama school record for passing yards in a game. He had five touchdowns in the 42–35 win.[19] The previous record was held byScott Hunter.[20]
Young won theHeisman Trophy following the end of the 2021 season, becoming the first Alabama quarterback to win the award.[21][22] In addition to the Heisman Trophy, Young won AP Player of the Year, the Davey O'Brien Award, the Manning Award, the Maxwell Award,Southeastern Conference (SEC) Offensive Player of the Year, and was a consensusAll-American.[23][24][25][26][27][28]
Overall, Young passed for 4,872 yards, 47 passing touchdowns, and seven interceptions to go along with three rushing touchdowns in 15 games.[29] He led the SEC in passing yards and passing touchdowns in the 2021 season.[30]
Young started his junior season off strong with 195 passing yards and five passing touchdowns to go along with five carries for 100 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown in the 55–0 victory overUtah State.[31] In his junior year, Young led the Crimson Tide to an 11–2 record, including a 45–20 victory over No. 14Kansas State in the2022Sugar Bowl.[32][33] He finished in sixth in Heisman Trophy voting.[34] He passed for 3,328 yards, 32 passing touchdowns, and five interceptions to go along with 49 carries for 185 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns in 12 games.[35] On January 2, 2023, Young announced that he would forgo his senior season and enter the 2023 NFL Draft.[36]

Young was selected by theCarolina Panthers as thefirst overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Panthers, who held the ninth overall pick, traded that pick, wide receiverD. J. Moore, and several other draft picks to theChicago Bears for the first overall pick.[38] He signed his four-year rookie contract, worth $37.9 million fully guaranteed, on July 21, 2023.[39]
On September 10, 2023, Young made his NFL debut in a week 1 loss against theAtlanta Falcons, where he threw his first career touchdown toHayden Hurst. He also threw two interceptions, both to FalconssafetyJessie Bates.[40] In week two, Young threw for 153 yards and a touchdown toAdam Thielen in his home and primetime debut in a 20-17 loss to theNew Orleans Saints.[41] On September 22, 2023, Young was ruled out for week 3 with a sprained ankle.[42]
On October 29, 2023, in week 8, Young got his first win as he defeated 2nd overall pickC. J. Stroud and theHouston Texans 15–13. Young threw for 235 yards and one touchdown in the win.[43] On December 17, 2023, in week 15 against the rival Falcons, Young threw for 167 yards and led a 95-yard game-winning drive for a 9–7 victory. The win was the Panthers' second of the season and ended a six-game losing streak.[44] The following week againstJordan Love and theGreen Bay Packers, Young had the best game of his rookie year to that point, throwing for 312 yards and two touchdowns, both toD. J. Chark. The Panthers lost 33–30.[45]
He finished his rookie season throwing for 2,877 yards, 11 touchdowns and ten interceptions as the Panthers finished with a 2–15 record.[46][47] Young also finished with apasser rating of 73.7, a QBR of 33.2 and completed only 59.8% of his passes.[48] Young had the worst passer rating under pressure of any quarterback in the league with 27.6.[49] Young finished the season with the second worst touchdown percentage by a starting quarterback, only behindPittsburgh Steelers quarterbackKenny Pickett, at 1.9%.[50]

Following the second week of the season, Young was benched for veteranAndy Dalton. The Panthers had lost their first two games to the Saints and Chargers by a combined 60 points, as Young threw three interceptions and no touchdowns over that span.[51]
Ahead of the Panthers' week 8 matchup against theDenver Broncos, Young was reinstated as the starter due to Dalton spraining his thumb in a car accident.[52] In his return, Young threw his first touchdown of the season, connecting on a six-yard pass to rookieXavier Legette. He finished the game with 224 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions on 24-of-37 passing in a 28–14 loss.[53] After losing to the Broncos, Young led the Panthers to victories over theNew Orleans Saints andNew York Giants, marking the first time the Panthers won consecutive games since 2022.[54] Across those games, Young threw for a combined 297 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, completing 60.8% of his passes.[55][56]
Young retained the starting role ahead of the Panthers' week 12 game against theKansas City Chiefs.[57] In a narrow 30–27 loss, Young completed 21-of-35 passes for 263 yards and a touchdown, marking one of his best performances of the season.[58] Young continued to lead the team through close losses to theTampa Bay Buccaneers andPhiladelphia Eagles, both decided by a single score.[59][60] Against Tampa Bay, he recorded a season-high 298 passing yards along with a passing and rushing touchdown.[61] In week 16, Young finished with three touchdowns and guided the Panthers to a 36–30 overtime victory against theArizona Cardinals, eliminating Arizona from playoff contention.[62] Young had the best game of his career in the final week of the season against the Atlanta Falcons, passing for three touchdowns and rushing for two, along with a career-high 123.5 passer rating as the Panthers won 44–38 in overtime, marking Carolina's highest point total since 2017.[63]Dating back to his return to the starting lineup, Young threw for 2,104 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions, along with five rushing scores. He also led the Panthers to a 4–6 record after returning to the lineup, compared to a 2–16 record to begin his career.[64] Young finished his sophomore season with a passer rating of 82.2, a QBR of 54.1, and an overall completion percentage of 60.9%, all of which were improvements from his rookie season.[65][66][67] Following the season, head coachDave Canales confirmed that Young would be the team's quarterback heading into the 2025 season.[68]
In a week 7 victory over theNew York Jets, Young exited the contest early after a sack byJowon Briggs. The following day, it was reported that Young had sustained a high ankle sprain and was expected to miss the week 8 matchup against theBuffalo Bills,[69] but this was unconfirmed by head coachDave Canales, who said Young was officially "day-to-day".[70] In a Week 11, 30–27 overtime win over theAtlanta Falcons, Young put up three passing touchdowns on 448 passing yards. He surpassedCam Newton’s previous record (432) for the most passing yards in a game in Panthers franchise history.[71]
