In 1969 his first work appeared as illustrations inMallorn , the BritishTolkien Society magazine,[ 5] followed in 1972 by a weekly strip in hiscollege newspaper . He continued in the scene after leaving college, producingBrainstorm Comix , the first three of which formedThe Chester P. Hackenbush Trilogy , a character reworked byAlan Moore as Chester Williams forSwamp Thing .[ 6]
Talbot startedThe Adventures of Luther Arkwright in 1978. It was originally published inNear Myths and continued on over the years in other publications, includingPssst! and by the publisherValkyrie Press . It was eventually collected into one volume byDark Horse Comics . Along withRaymond Briggs 'When the Wind Blows , it is considered one of the first Britishgraphic novels .[citation needed ] In the early-to-mid 1980s Talbot provided art for some of2000 AD ' s flagship serials, producing three series ofNemesis the Warlock , as well as occasional strips forJudge Dredd .
Talbot moved to the U.S. market in the 1990s and principally worked forDC Comics on titles such asHellblazer ,[ 7] Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight , andDead Boy Detectives . Talbot collaborated withNeil Gaiman onThe Sandman and provided art for the "Fables & Reflections ", "A Game of You ", and "Worlds' End " story arcs.[ 8] [ 9] HisThe Tale of One Bad Rat (1994) deals with a girl's recovery from childhoodsexual abuse . In 2007 he releasedAlice in Sunderland , which documents the connections betweenLewis Carroll ,Alice Liddell , and theSunderland andWearside area.[ 16] He wrote and drew the layouts forCherubs! , which he describes as "an irreverent fast-paced supernatural comedy-adventure."[ 17]
