Brue (Scottish Gaelic:Brù) is a village on theIsle of Lewis in theWest Side district, in theOuter Hebrides, Scotland. It is acrofting township and it is composed of two areas: Am Baile Staigh, which is nearer the coast, and Pàirc Bhrù, which runs towards the moor. In total it covers a road distance of 2.5 km.[1] Brue is situated on a minor road which joins to theA858,[2] and is within the parish ofBarvas.[3]
The name Brue is an anglicised form of theScottish GaelicBrù which in turn comes from anOld Norse word which is believed to have meantbridge; this reflects the centuries ofNorsemen occupation and settlement in theOuter Hebrides.[4]
The coastline at Brue is the site of various cairns, including a prehistoric one,[5][6][7] and is also near to the site of ablackhouse.[8]
