Stuart Bruce Greenwood (born August 12, 1956) is a Canadian actor and producer. He has starred in five films by Canadian filmmakerAtom Egoyan and has been nominated for threeCanadian Screen Awards, once forBest Actor forElephant Song (2014) and twice forBest Supporting Actor, forThe Sweet Hereafter (1997) andBeing Julia (2004).
Greenwood is known for frequently portraying thePresident of the United States, beginning with his role asJohn F. Kennedy inThirteen Days (2000), for which he won theSatellite Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture; he later played fictional presidents inNational Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007) andKingsman: The Golden Circle (2017). He also portrayedCaptain Christopher Pike inJ. J. Abrams'sStar Trek reboot series (2009–2013) and Gerald Burlingame inGerald's Game (2017). He has appeared in other supporting roles in such films asDouble Jeopardy (1999),I, Robot (2004),Capote (2005),Déjà Vu (2006),I'm Not There (2007),Meek's Cutoff (2010),Flight (2012),The Place Beyond the Pines (2012),The Post (2017), andDoctor Sleep (2019).

Greenwood was born inRouyn-Noranda,Quebec, Canada, the son of Mary Sylvia (née Ledingham) and Hugh John Greenwood. His mother worked as a nurse in an extended care unit. His father was born inVancouver, and was a geophysicist and professor who taught atPrinceton University.[1]

Greenwood is known in the United States for his appearances inStar Trek;I, Robot;Double Jeopardy;The Core;Thirteen Days as presidentJohn F. Kennedy;Capote asJack Dunphy,Truman Capote's lover;Eight Below as Professor Davis McClaren; andFirehouse Dog.[2] He is also known for his role in the video gameCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 as the voice of Overlord.[3]
He had prominent roles in the award-winningAtom Egoyan filmsExotica,The Sweet Hereafter, andArarat.[4] He appeared in the 1980s teen cult filmThe Malibu Bikini Shop and starred inMee-Shee: The Water Giant. He played a role inThe World's Fastest Indian and also featured in theBob Dylan biographical filmI'm Not There.[5] He appeared inDinner for Schmucks as the cruel executive who hosts a dinner for "idiots".[6]
On television, Greenwood has appeared onSt. Elsewhere (Dr. Seth Griffin, 1986–1988) andKnots Landing (Pierce Lawton, 1991–92), and starred in theUPN seriesNowhere Man (Thomas Veil, 1995–96).[7] He also guest-starred in one episode of the popular Canadian showRoad to Avonlea, for which he won aGemini Award for "Best Guest Performance in a Series by an Actor".[8]
On June 10, 2007,HBO'sJohn from Cincinnati premiered, starring Greenwood.[9] He also appears as the President of the United States inNational Treasure: Book of Secrets.[10] He playedBeach Boys drummerDennis Wilson inSummer Dreams: Story of the Beach Boys.[11] In 2009, he worked with Australian directorBruce Beresford, playing the part ofBen Stevenson (artistic director ofHouston Ballet), in the critically acclaimed filmMao's Last Dancer.[12] He voicedBruce Wayne / Batman in the animated filmBatman: Under the Red Hood, the animated seriesYoung Justice, and the animated short filmBatman: Death in the Family.[13]
He played the lead role in the horror thrillerCell 213.[14] He was the lead for theSteven Spielberg–produced 2012 ABC seriesThe River,[15] and reprised his role asAdmiral Christopher Pike forJ. J. Abrams'Star Trek Into Darkness.[16] In 2015, he had a recurring role in the last season ofMad Men as Richard Burghoff, a romantic interest forJoan Harris (Christina Hendricks).[17]
Greenwood is married to Susan Devlin and they have one daughter.[18] They live in thePacific Palisades neighborhood, within Los Angeles, California.[19]
