ABrown Betty is a traditional Americandessert made from fruit, usuallyapple (this variant is known asApple Betty), but alsoberries orpears and sweetened crumbs. Similar to acobbler orapple crisp, the fruit is baked, and, in this case, the sweetened crumbs are placed in layers between the fruit. It is usually served withlemonsauce orwhipped cream.
The dish was first mentioned in print in 1864.[1] A recipe from 1877 uses apple sauce and cracker crumbs.[2]
Apple Brown Betty was one of the favorite desserts ofRonald andNancy Reagan in theWhite House.[3]
