Ptolemy'sGeography (2nd century AD) described a point called Νοτιον (Notion, "southern promontory") which referred to Brow Head.[3] Evidence of ancient settlement on the headland includes aringfort and possiblepromontory fort site in Mallavoge townland.[4]

Also located in the townland is a ruined three-storeysignal tower, built in 1804 following an attemptedFrench attempted invasion of Bantry, to defend against further potential incursions.[5][6]

Copper mining took place at Brow Head during the 19th century and evidence of mines and miners' houses remain.[7][8] The firstcopper ore was extracted here in 1852 and mining continued intermittently untilc. 1906.[8]

The ruins of an early 20th centuryMarconi station are also on the headland.[5][9] The Brow Head station was raided and destroyed by a local detachment of theIrish Republican Army, during theIrish War of Independence in August 1920.[10][11][12]

In 2016, Brow Head was used as a filming location forStar Wars: The Last Jedi.[13][14]
