Brontë is a crater onMercury. It has a diameter of 68 kilometres (42 miles).[1] Its name was adopted by theInternational Astronomical Union in 1976. Bronte is named for English writersCharlotte Brontë, who lived from 1816 to 1855,Emily Brontë, who lived from 1818 to 1848, andAnne Brontë, who lived from 1820 to 1849, and English writer and artistBranwell Brontë, who lived from 1817 to 1848.[1] The crater was first imaged byMariner 10 in 1974.[2]
Brontë forms a crater pair withDegas immediately to the south.[3] Brontë is covered withejecta andsecondary craters from the much younger Degas. Both craters lie withinSobkou Planitia.
