Britt Weerman (Dutch:[brɪtˈʋeːrmɑn]; born 13 June 2003)[2] is a Dutchtrack and field athlete who competes in thehigh jump.

She won the silver medal at the2023 European Indoor Championships. Weerman was the2021 European Under-20 champion and finished second at theWorld U20 Championships a year later. She is theDutch record holder for the high jump both outdoors and indoors,[3] and has won eight national titles.

Early life and background

Britt Weerman was born on 13 June 2003 inAssen, Netherlands. Initially, she trained ingymnastics from the age of six to thirteen whencartilage damage in her elbow joint forced her to stop. As of 2022, she studied commercial economics at theJohan Cruyff Academy.[4][5]

Youth and junior career

In 2020, at age 16/17, Weerman won Dutch under-18 titles in the high jump both indoors and outdoors and also claimed her first national senior titles, both indoors and outdoors.[2]

The following year, she earned the gold medal at theEuropean U20 Championships held inTallinn, Estonia with a jump of1.88 m.[6]

In July 2022, the 19-year-old set a Dutch national record of 1.95 m at a meeting inNinove, Belgium, improving her personal best by 7 cm and beatingNadine Broersen's previous record by 1 cm.[7][8] In August, she won silver at theWorld U20 Championships staged inCali, Colombia, clearing1.93 m to finish second behindKarmen Bruus and ahead ofAngelina Topić.[9] The same month, sheplaced fourth with the same height at theMunich 2022 European Championships, this time behind Topić who also jumped 1.93 m, securing the bronze medal on countback.[2]

On 3 February 2023, Weerman broke by 3 cm Broersen's Dutch indoor record with a clearance of 1.96 m inWeinheim, Germany, her outright best.[3] She equalled this achievement at theEuropean Indoor Championships held in March inIstanbul to take the silver medal behindYaroslava Mahuchikh. It was the first medal for a Dutch high jumper in almost 50 years, afterAnnemieke Bouma's bronze in1975.[10]
