Britt Benae Stewart Durant (née Stewart; born September 21, 1989)[1] is an American professional dancer, choreographer, and teacher. Best known for her appearances on the reality competition programDancing with the Stars, she is the firstAfrican American woman to be cast on the series as a pro.
Britt Benae Durant was born on September 21, 1989, inAurora, Colorado,[1] and lived inSeattle, Washington for some time after her birth.[2] Both of her parents worked in business and were unfamiliar with dance, but they enrolled her in classes when she was three after a stranger at an outdoormusic festival noticed her moving to the music.[2] Stewart's training began withballet andtap at a local school in Seattle.[2] After her family moved back to Colorado, she continued training at the Artistic Fusion Dance Academy, acompetition studio.[2][3]
Despite her extensivedance education, Stewart originally aspired to become apediatric surgeon.[4] She studiedmodern andcultural dance styles at theDenver School of the Arts, where she graduated in 2007.[3] She then attendedLoyola Marymount University as adouble major in dance and science, but she suspended her studies halfway through her second semester.[2]
Stewart appeared inKenny Ortega's trilogy ofHigh School Musical films as aprincipal dancer (2006–2008).[2] She later performed inFame (2009),No Strings Attached (2011), andTeen Beach Movie (2013). On television, Stewart booked shows such asAmerican Idol,Bunheads,A Capitol Fourth,[5]Dancing Fools,[6]Gilmore Girls,Glee,Grey's Anatomy, andThe Voice.[2] She toured and performed with several musicians, includingJanet Jackson,Rihanna,Annie Lennox,Katy Perry,[7]Selena Gomez,Florence and the Machine,Demi Lovato, andNick Jonas.[3]
Producers from the reality competition seriesDancing with the Stars watched Stewart perform as she was rehearsing forThe Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland 60 (2016) and asked her to audition for theirtroupe. Six months later, she made her series debut onseason 22 without any formal training inballroom dance.[8] Stewart became a full-time troupe member thefollowing season, and remained in that role until the troupe was cut forseason 28.[9] On August 18, 2020, she was named the firstBlack female pro inDancing with the Stars history.[10]
Forseason 29, Stewart was partnered with Olympic figure skaterJohnny Weir.[11] They reached the semi-finals and were eliminated on November 16, 2020, in a double elimination alongsideSkai Jackson andAlan Bersten. Weir and Stewart finished in sixth place.[12]
Forseason 30, Stewart was partnered with film and television actorMartin Kove.[13] They were the first couple eliminated from the competition, finishing in fifteenth place on September 27, 2021; Stewart's lowest placement to date.[14]
Forseason 31, Stewart was partnered with deaf film and television actorDaniel Durant.[15] They reached the semi-finals and were eliminated on November 14, 2022, in a double elimination alongsideTrevor Donovan andEmma Slater.[16] Durant and Stewart finished in fifth place; Stewart's highest placement to date.[16]
Forseason 32, Stewart was partnered withNFL running backAdrian Peterson.[17] His casting was panned by audience viewers due to his history oflegal issues, which includes arrests forchild abuse anddomestic violence.[18] Peterson and Stewart were ultimately eliminated on October 17, 2023, during the fourth week of competition, finishing in eleventh place.[19]
Forseason 33, Stewart was partnered with film and television actorEric Roberts. They were eliminated during the third week of competition on October 8, 2024, in a double elimination alongsideReginald VelJohnson andEmma Slater. Both couples finished in tenth place.[20]
Forseason 34, Stewart was partnered withNBApoint guardBaron Davis.[21] They were eliminated during the second week of competition on September 23, 2025, in a double elimination alongsideCorey Feldman andJenna Johnson. Both couples finished in thirteenth place.[22]

Stewart is severely allergic toshrimp andgluten.[23] From 2018 to 2020, she dated actor Reid Fenlaw.[1][24] Stewart entered a romantic relationship with herDancing with the Stars partnerDaniel Durant in November 2022, shortly afterhis stint on the competition series ended.[25] As Durant has beendeaf since birth, she made the decision to learnAmerican Sign Language to communicate with him.[26] They got engaged onChristmas Eve 2023 during a hike inLake Arrowhead, California.[27]
Stewart and Durant were married on August 23, 2025, inSanta Margarita, California.[28] A number of their friends from the entertainment industry attended the ceremony;Johnny Weir, Stewart's firstDancing with the Stars partner, served as one of her bridesmaids.[28]
