TheBrigianii (Gaulish: *Brigianioi) were aGallic tribe dwelling around present-dayBriançon during theIron Age and theRoman period.
They are mentioned asBrigianii byPliny (1st c. AD),[1] and asBrigiani,Brigantionis andBricianiorum on inscriptions.[2][3]
Their name may be based on theGaulish rootbrig- ('high, elevated'),[3] or onbrīgo- ('might, strength').[4]
The Gallitae lived in the region ofBriançonnais [fr], in the center of theCottian Kingdom.[5] Their territory was located north of theCaturiges, west of theQuariates, east of theTricorii, south of theSegovii.[6]
Their chief town was known as Brigantio (modernBriançon), meaning 'eminence, high/elevated place' in Gaulish.[5][7]
They are mentioned byPliny the Elder as one of the Alpine tribes conquered by Rome in 16–15 BC, and whose name was engraved on theTropaeum Alpium.[1]
