Brenda Sempare (born 9 November 1961)[1] is an English former international women'sfootballer. She played in all four games ofEngland's1995 FIFA Women's World Cup appearance.[1]

Club career

Sempare helped Friends of Fulham win the 1985FA Women's Cup. In November 2001Hope Powell wrote inThe Times that Sempare's performance in 1985's 2–0 final win overDoncaster Belles atCraven Cottage was "the best all-round performance I have ever seen."[2] Sempare played in two more WFA Cup finals with Friends of Fulham but they were defeated byLeasowe Pacific in the1989 final held atOld Trafford and byDoncaster Belles in the1990 final at theBaseball Ground.[3]

In April 1996, Sempare was one ofCroydon Ladies' penalty scorers as Croydon beatLiverpool Ladies on penalties in theFA Women's Cup final atThe New Den.[4] The following month goals from Sempare andKerry Davis earned a 2–1 league win overArsenal Ladies, which sealed a domesticdouble for Croydon.

Sempare retired at the end of that 1995–96 season, but returned to action during 1996–97. On 23 September 2010, she was inducted into theEnglish Football Hall of Fame.[5]

International career

Sempare scored a goal in the final as England beatItaly in the final of the 1985 Mundialito.[6] While working as apostwoman Sempare helped England reach the semi-final of the1987 European Competition for Women's Football, where they lost 3–2 toSweden after extra time. She had also featured in the1984 tournament,[7] where England reached the final.

Sempare also played forEngland at the1995 World Cup.[1]

She was allotted 62 when the FA announced their legacy numbers scheme to honour the 50th anniversary of England’s inaugural international.[8][9]
