Thecarotid branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve (carotid sinus nerve orHering's nerve) is a small branch of theglossopharyngeal nerve (cranial nerve IX) that innervates thecarotid sinus, andcarotid body.
It runs downward anterior to theinternal carotid artery. It communicates with thevagus nerve and sympathetic trunk before dividing in the angle of the bifurcation of thecommon carotid artery to innervate the carotid body, and carotid sinus.
It conveys information from thebaroreceptors of thecarotid sinus to the vasomotor center in the brainstem (in order to mediateblood pressurehomeostasis), and from chemoreceptors of thecarotid body[further explanation needed] (mainly conveying information aboutpartial pressures of blood oxygen, and carbon dioxide).
