Description

The Bowery Bagles servesNew York-style bagels inPortland, Oregon. The original bagelry and coffee shop operates onBroadway in thenorthwest Portland part of theOld Town Chinatown neighborhood.[2][3] The interior has white subway tiles, a sign forNew York City Subway'sBowery station, and a tilemosaic above the coffee station.[3] On weekdays, Bowery also operates from within theSmith Memorial Student Union on thePortland State University campus.[4][5]

The four-ounce bagels are inspired by ones the owner enjoyed at a young age at Glendale Bakery, a German bakery inQueens.[6][7] Among varieties at Bowery are cinnamon raisin spice,everything, onion, plain,poppy seed,pumpernickel,salt and pepper,sea salt,sesame, andwhole grain.[3] Spreads use ingredients likecream cheese, bacon, mushroom, and onion.[8] Other bagel toppings includekimchi, smoked salmon, and roasted vegetables.[3] Thegravlax is prepared withdill,fennel leaves, andClear Creek Distillery's Eau de Vie of Douglas Firvodka.[9]

Bowery also servesbreakfast sandwiches andgrilled cheese.[8] Among breakfast sandwiches is the Burnside (bacon,egg, andcheddar cheese), the Fremont (sausage, egg, cheddar), and the Lent, which hascaramelized onion, egg, andGruyère cheese.[10] The Jesse Applegate hasvegan sausage, egg, and cheese, and theSimon Benson has ham, egg, and cheese.[4] The Flanders sandwich haseggplant andzucchini onfocaccia with red pepper, arugulapesto, chevre, red onion, and lettuce. The Lovejoy hasturkey meat on abaguette, with black pepper mayonnaise, white cheddar,peppadews, andwatercress, and the Pettygrove haspork loin onmultigrain bread with apple andceleriaccoleslaw,gouda cheese, mustard, andred leaf lettuce. The Stark sandwich hasroast beef onciabatta with mushroomduxelle, gruyere,pickled shallots, and arugula.[10] Bowery has also served soup, as well as coffee fromStumptown.[10]

History

Bowery is owned by Michael Madigan.[11] The original shop opened in Old Town Chinatown in June 2012,[10][12] in a space previously used as anoptometrist shop and anart gallery called Ogle.[13]

In 2015, the business announced plans to expand, signing a five-year lease on a 5,000-square-foot space innorth Portland'sKenton neighborhood, previously used as awarehouse, for all production of all-kosher baked goods.[14][15]

Reception

Bowery ranked fourth inWillamette Week's 2017blind taste test of fourteen bagel shops in thePortland metropolitan area, with a score of 57 out of 100.[16] Daniel Barnett,Brooke Jackson-Glidden, and Nathan Williams included Bowery inEater Portland's 2024 overview of ten "real-deal" bagel shops in the city.[4]
