Bouenza (can also be written asBuenza orBwenza[2]) is adepartment of theRepublic of the Congo in the southern part of the country. It borders the departments ofLékoumou,Niari, andPool, and internationally, theDemocratic Republic of the Congo. The regional capital isMadingou. Towns and cities includeLoudima,Mouyondzi,Loutété andNkayi.

The population was 363,850 as of 2023,[4] and the area is 12,265.4 km².[5]

Industry and agriculture

Bouenza has some industry andcash crops. Among the principal activities are acement factory inLoutété,sugar cane plantations in Nkayi, and there are reserves ofcopper,lead andzinc.Hydroelectric power is provided by theMoukoukoulou Dam built inMindouli.Farming includesbananas,palm oil,groundnuts,tobacco andbeans.[1]
