Boholano (Cebuano:Binol-anon) is a variant of theCebuano language spoken in theisland province ofBohol in theVisayas and a major portion ofSouthern Leyte, as well as parts ofMindanao, particularly inNorthern Mindanao andCaraga. It is sometimes erroneously described as a separatelanguage[1] even though Binol-anon originated as adialect continuum of theCebuano language.[2][3]
Boholano, especially as spoken in central Bohol, can be distinguished from other Cebuano variants by a fewphonetic changes:
The Bohol dialect developed in the region after the Cebuano language arrived there fromCebu. TheCebuano language, descended fromProto-Austronesian (ca. 6000 years ago), originated in theSugbo heartland[2] and then "has spread from its base in Cebu" toBohol, thus beginning the Bohol Cebuano dialect.[3]
