Boge is a populated area, asocken (not to be confused withparish), on the Swedish island ofGotland.[3] It comprises the same area as theadministrative Boge District, established on 1 January 2016.[4]

Geography

Boge is the name of the socken as well as the district. It is also the name of the small village surrounding themedievalBoge Church,[5] sometimes referred to asBoge kyrkby. It is situated on the northern east coast of Gotland.[6] The south part of thelocalitySlite is located in the north part of Boge socken.[7]

As of 2019[update], Boge Church belongs to Othem-Bogeparish in Norra Gotlandspastorat, along with the churches inSlite andOthem.[8][9]

History

Boge is best known for one of thestone ships located in the area Tjelvar's Grave. The stone ship is 18 m (59 ft) long and 5 m (16 ft) wide. It dates from theBronze Age. Close to it are twohillforts and a minorgrave field. According to legend, the ship is the burial site ofTjelvar, the first Gotlander.[10]
