Robert Elden Caffrey (born January 7, 1962) is an American formerprofessional baseballcatcher andfirst baseman.

Career

Caffrey attendedLoara High School inAnaheim, California, andCalifornia State University, Fullerton, where he playedcollege baseball for theCal State Fullerton Titans baseball team.[1] In the1984 season, Fullerton won the1984 College World Series.[2] That year, his 28home runs and 90runs batted in were both the fifth-most in college baseball.[3] He played for theUnited States national baseball team in the1984 Summer Olympics.[1] He appeared in the Olympics as adesignated hitter, catching only fourinnings, and had a .196batting average.[4]

TheMontreal Expos selected Caffrey in the first round, with the 13th overall selection, of the1984 MLB Draft.[2] He received a $100,000signing bonus from the Expos.[1] He made his professional debut with theWest Palm Beach Expos of theClass A-AdvancedFlorida State League, and batted .132 in 12 games.[3] In 1985, Caffrey underwentarthroscopic surgery on his shoulder. He hadreconstructive surgery performed on his shoulder the next year,[1] and missed the first half of the 1986 season. When he was activated, he played for West Palm Beach.[5] He only appeared in 13 games in 1986.[1]

The Expos moved Caffrey tofirst base in 1987, and he split the season between West Palm Beach and theBurlington Expos of theClass AMidwest League. He hit .243 with 20 home runs combined over the season. In 1988, he was promoted to theJacksonville Expos of theClass AASouthern League, where he served as the backup catcher. He batted .263 with four home runs. The Expos released him duringspring training in 1989.[1]

Personal life

Caffrey met his wife inBurlington, Iowa. He worked there in a beer distributing warehouse for a year and a half after his retirement from baseball, and then the couple moved toSouthern California. Caffrey and his wife have two children.[1]
