Blur Studio Inc.[1] is an American visual effects and computer animation company which specializes in CGI visual effects, CGI animation, and CGI design. Located inCulver City,California,[2] the studio has produced CGI-animated films, teasers and ad spots for television, as well as video-game CGI cinematics.
Blur Studio was founded in March 1995[3] by David Stinnett,Tim Miller, and Cat Chapman.[4] Blur producedXbox demo videoTwo to Tango for console's mascots Raven and Robot.[5][6][7] Sometime between 2001 and 2003, the studio took interest inThe Lego Group'sBionicle theme and produced a short test pitch, under the title"Tahu Nuva vs Kohrak", but Lego had ultimately passed on the project.[8]
The studio worked on the 2004 short filmGopher Broke which was nominated for 2004Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.[9]
In 2009, they assisted with the creation of CGI environments in the Academy Award-winning filmAvatar.
In 2011, Blur created the openingtitle sequence forThe Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, based on the first book ofStieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy and directed byDavid Fincher.[10][11]
They created the "Heaven and Hell" sequence forSouth Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut.[12]
Blur Studio produced a cinematic trailer for the video gamePlanetSide 2 titled "Death is No Excuse."[13][14] They were also responsible for the cinematic trailers ofBatman: Arkham City,Batman: Arkham Origins andBatman: Arkham Knight, as well asBioShock,BioShock 2 andBioShock Infinite. They remade theHalo 2 cutscenes forHalo: The Master Chief Collection (2014)[15] and produced the cutscenes forHalo Wars 2 (2017)[16] after doing so forHalo Wars (2009).[17]
In 2016, Miller and the studio returned to theSonic the Hedgehog franchise and were involved with thefilm adaptation of the series which was in development atSony Pictures until they put the project into turnaround and sold the rights toParamount Pictures in 2017.[18] The film was released on February 14, 2020 in collaboration withSega and their animation studio,Marza Animation Planet, andOriginal Film. Asequel was released on April 8, 2022.[19][20]
In 2017, Blur created another opening title sequence for theNetflix psychological thriller,Mindhunter based on the 1995 true-crime book,Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit byJohn E. Douglas andMark Olshaker, produced and directed by David Fincher.[21][22]
In 2019, the studio produced the animation for the Netflix anthology seriesLove, Death & Robots, created by Tim Miller, and also produced the second volume of the series. On May 16, 2019, it was announced that Blur Studio's filmThe Goon, based on the 1999comic of the same name byEric Powell, secured a distribution deal with20th Century Fox andChernin Entertainment.[23]
