Cloak or hood in Britain and Gaul
Abirrus orbirrus brittanicus was arainproof,hoodedwoollencloak (or simply a hood alone), characteristically worn inBritain andGaul at the time of theRoman Empire and into theMiddle Ages.[1][2]
A mosaic atChedworth Roman Villa shows a Briton wearing a birrus brittanicus;[3] there is also one shown on a statue of a ploughman at theBritish Museum.[4]
