Birkenhead Lake Provincial Park is aprovincial park inBritish Columbia,Canada, located in theLillooet Country region. The park lies north of the communities ofSquamish,Whistler andPemberton, and immediately northwest ofBirkenhead Peak andGates Lake (a.k.a. Birken Lake) at the community ofBirken.
The park has a size of 104.39 km2 (40.31 sq mi), while Birkenhead Lake itself is 4.087 km2 (1.578 sq mi).[1][2]
Birkenhead Provincial Park was established in 1963 to provide a recreation and conservation area between thePemberton Valley andLillooet. It was expanded in 1993 and again in 2008 to preserve more of the Sockeye Creek watershed.[1]
The park's wildlife includesmountain goats,moose,snowshoe hare,black bears andgrizzly bears, while Birkenhead Lake itself is home toRainbow Trout andKokanee. The lakes in the park are also home to a protected species ofbull trout, often mistaken for Dolly Varden.
The park is located 90 kilometres north-east ofWhistler, the last 12 kilometres of which are a non-paved gravel road branching off the main paved betweenMount Currie andD'Arcy northeast of the community ofBirken. The park has 91 vehicle accessible campsites and a lakeside beach area.
