Biren Kumar Basak (born 16 May 1951) is an Indianhandloom weaver[1][2] from theNadia district.[3][4] He is the recipient ofPadma Shri, the fourth highestcivilian award of India.[5]
Basak worked as a weaver at the age of 13 inPhulia. His family migrated toWest Bengal fromTangail after the partition.[6] Since 1970s, Basak weaves handloom sarees and used to sell it going door-to-door inKolkata. He started his business with one Rs. In 2013 he received the National Award for craftsmanship. Some of his notable clients areSatyajit Ray,Hemanta Mukhopadhyay,Mamata Banerjee,Sourav Ganguly,Amjad Ali Khan,Lata Mangeshkar andAsha Bhosle.[5]
