Billy-Berclau (French pronunciation:[bilibɛʁklo];Picard:Bili-Bérclo) is acommune in thePas-de-Calaisdepartment in theHauts-de-Franceregion in northernFrance.[3]

Geography

A small town 10 miles (16 km) east ofBéthune and 12 miles (19 km) southwest ofLille, at the junction of the D163 and N47 roads. It is situated at the junction of theCanal de la Deûle and theCanal d'Aire. Light industry and a little farming have replaced the coal mining of the past.

History

The town was completely destroyed duringWorld War I. On 27 March 2003, an explosion at thedynamite factory killed four people.
