Bill Jackson Tchato Mbiayi (born 14 May 1975) is a Cameroonian former professionalfootballer who played as adefender. He played forCaen,Valence,Nice,Montpellier,1. FC Kaiserslautern,Qatar SC,Al-Khor andStrasbourg[4] andSapins. Tchato representedCameroon at international level, making 46 appearances over an eight-year period, scoring one goal.
Tchato began his career in France withCaen in 1995,[1] and made 18 league appearances in hisdebut season which ended with the club being promoted toDivision 1 as champions. He was transferred toValence in 1996, where he made 69 league appearances and scored six goals over the next two years.[1] In 1998, he joinedOGC Nice, scoring three goals in 70 league appearances during his time with the club.[1] Tchato was signed byMontpellier in 2000 and he helped them gain promotion to Division 1 in hisfirst season. He made 63 league appearances for the club before moving to Germany in 2003 to play forBundesliga sideFC Kaiserslautern.[5] In 2005, he returned to Nice for one season and then moved to the Middle East to play forQatar SC.[5] Two years later, he joinedAl-Khor. Tchato returned to France in 2010 withChampionnat National teamStrasbourg.[6] A year later, having seen Strasbourg relegated due to financial problems, Tchato moved to Gabon to joinFirst Division clubSapins.[7]
He made his debut for theCameroon national team in 2000.[8] He represented his country at the2002 FIFA World Cup,[9] and theAfrican Cup of Nations in the same year, which Cameroon won. Tchato appeared in twoFIFA Confederations Cup competitions, in2001 and2003.[9] He also played in the2004 and2008 African Cup of Nations, where Cameroon were defeated byEgypt in the final.
Born in M'Biam, Tchato moved to Europe at a young age with his parents, who worked for theEmbassy of Cameroon in Paris, and subsequently in London.[10] He acquiredFrench nationality bynaturalization on 9 December 1998.[11]
Bill's sonEnzo is also a professional footballer, and plays for Montpellier.[12]
