William Joseph Striegel (May 28, 1936 – July 23, 1992) was an Americanfootballoffensive guard in theNational Football League (NFL) for thePhiladelphia Eagles. He also was a member of theOakland Raiders andBoston Patriots in theAmerican Football League (AFL). He playedcollege football at theUniversity of the Pacific.
Striegel attendedChico Senior High School. He accepted a football scholarship from theUniversity of the Pacific.[1] He became a starter as a two-way tackle.[2]
Striegel was selected by thePhiladelphia Eagles in the eighth round (88th overall) of the1958 NFL draft.[3] He suffered an injury in practice with the 1958 College All-Star steam and was lost for the season. On May 9,1959, he was re-signed by the Eagles and was converted into anoffensive guard duringtraining camp.[4] He appeared in 12 games as a backup.
In1960, Striegel was selected by theDallas Cowboys in theexpansion draft.[5] He was tried atlinebacker anddefensive end.[6] He was released before the start of the season in September.
On September 19,1960, he was signed as afree agent by theOakland Raiders of theAmerican Football League to play as anoffensive tackle.[7] He appeared in one game during their inaugural season before being cut in October.
In October1960, he signed with theBoston Patriots of theAmerican Football League to play as alinebacker. He appeared in 5 games with one start during their inaugural season.
In September1965, he was hired by the expansion franchiseAtlanta Falcons to work as a scout.[8]
