William Arnold Bevan, Sr. (March 26, 1913 – August 26, 1975)[1] was an Americanfootball player and coach. He played college football at theUniversity of Minnesota and was a consensus selection at theguard position on the1934 College Football All-America Team.

Biography

He grew up inSt. Paul, Minnesota, and graduated from St. Paul Central High School.[2] He then enrolled at theUniversity of Minnesota, where he was a member of theMinnesota Golden Gophers football team under head coachBernie Bierman. He played at the guard position on Minnesota teams that were undefeated for two consecutive seasons from 1933 to 1934 and was one of four first-team All-Americans on the1934 Minnesota team that has been recognized as Minnesota's first national championship team.[2] He was a consensus first-team selection for the1934 College Football All-America Team.[3] He was also a boxer who won theBig Ten Conference boxing championship in the light heavyweight class.[2]

After leaving Minnesota, Bevan was a football coach atIowa State University,Tulane University,Dartmouth College, and theUniversity of Pittsburgh. DuringWorld War II, he served in theUnited States Army and attained the rank of lieutenant colonel. After the war, Bevan pursued a career in business. He also volunteered as a coach atChisago City High SchoolChisago City, Minnesota,Shattuck, andCarleton College. He died in 1975.[2]
