Bhoksa, also known asBuksa/Bukhasiya, areindigenous peoples living mainly in theIndian states ofUttarakhand andUttar Pradesh. They are mostly concentrated inDehradun andNainital districts ofUttrakhand in the foothills of the outerHimalayas.[3] They are also found in theBijnor district of Uttar Pradesh. Both communities have been grantedScheduled Tribe status.
The Bhoksa speak theBuksa language.[4]
The language is spoken in Uttarakhand, mainly in southwestern Nainital district, along a diagonal fromRamnagar to Dineshpur. It is spoken in around 130 villages inKichha andKashipur tehsils, some in Bijnor andPauri Garhwal district.[citation needed]
As of 2001[update], the Bhoksa of Uttarakhand were classified as a Scheduled Tribe under theIndian government's reservation program ofaffirmative action.[5] AsBuksa, they are similarly classified in Uttar Pradesh.[6]
