Bhima Nayak orBheema Nayak (death 29 December 1876) was an Indian revolutionary.[1] He fought against the British in theIndian Rebellion of 1857.[2] When Bhima was convicted by theBritish government, he was kept inPort Blair andNicobar.[3]
Nayak hails fromBarwani district of Madhya Pradesh. As aBhil tribal leader he took active part in theIndian Rebellion of 1857 against theEast India Company. Nayak metTantia Tope at the time of revolt. He confronted the force of Captain Keatings, but successfully escaped. In 1861 he was captured from his hideout and sent toAndaman Islands for corporal punishment.[4] He was hanged inPort Blair on December 29, 1876.[5] Bhima was also known asNimad'sRobin Hood.[6][3]
A government scheme, "Shaheed Bhima Nayak Pariyojna" inMadhya Pradesh is named after him.[7] CMShivraj Singh Chauhan dedicated a"Bhima Nayak Memorial" at village Dhaba Bawdi of Badwani district on January 21, 2017.[8]
