Bezirk Cottbus was adistrict (Bezirk) of theGerman Democratic Republic (East Germany). The administrative seat and main town wasCottbus.
The district was established, along with the other 13, on 25 July 1952,de facto replacing theEast German States (Länder) which had been established in the post-war period; these in turn had replaced the NaziGaue (and thepre-war States andPrussian Provinces which had beende facto but notde jure superseded by theGaue). Most ofBezirk Cottbus had been part ofBrandenburg, with smaller parts taken fromSaxony andSaxony-Anhalt
On 3 October 1990 theBezirke were disestablished due to thereunification of Germany. Most of theKreise ofBezirk Cottbus returned to the reconstituted states which they had belonged to before 1952: most went toBrandenburg, while the districts ofHoyerswerda andWeißwasser returned to Saxony andJessen returned toSaxony-Anhalt;Bad Liebenwerda andHerzberg, which had been part of Saxony-Anhalt before 1952 became part of Brandenburg.
Bezirk Cottbus, mainly located in Brandenburg and partly in Saxony (Hoyerswerda), bordered theBezirke ofFrankfurt,Potsdam,Halle,Leipzig andDresden. It also borderedPoland.

TheBezirk was divided into 15Kreise: 1 urban district (Stadtkreis) and 14 rural districts (Landkreise):
