Norberto Bercique Gomes Betuncal (born 31 January 1998), known asBeto, is a professionalfootballer who plays as astriker forPremier League clubEverton. Born in Portugal, he representsGuinea-Bissau at international level.
Born inLisbon ofBissau-Guinean descent, Beto started his senior career with amateursUnião de Tires in theLisbon Football Association, while working atKFC.[2] In 2018 he signed withOlímpico do Montijo of thethird division, finishing second in the scoring charts in hisonly season with 21 goals.[3][4]
Beto moved straight to thePrimeira Liga on 3 June 2019, joiningPortimonense on a four-year contract.[5] He made his debut in the competition on 9 August, coming on as an 87th-minutesubstitute in a 0–0 home draw againstB-SAD.[6] He finishedthe campaign with a further ten league appearances, all from the bench.[7]
Beto scored his first goal in the Portuguese top division on 8 November 2020, but in a 3–1 away loss toPorto.[8] He added ten more duringthe season, best in the squad.[9]
On the last day of the 2021 summertransfer window, Beto was transferred to Italian clubUdinese on aseason-long loan with an obligation to buy.[10] He scored four times in his first tenSerie A appearances, helping his team earn six points in the process.[11]
Beto scored ahat-trick in a 5–1 home win overCagliari on 3 April 2022.[12]
On 29 August 2023, Beto joinedPremier League clubEverton on a four-year deal for a reported fee of around £25.8 million (€30 million).[13][14] The following day, he made his debut and scored his first goal for theToffees in a 2–1 victory atDoncaster Rovers in thesecond round of theEFL Cup.[15] His league bow took place on 2 September, when he featured the entire 2–2 draw away toSheffield United.[16]
Beto scored his first goal in the league on 7 December 2023, closing the 3–0 win overNewcastle United atGoodison Park after playing the last minutes in place ofDominic Calvert-Lewin.[17] Twelve days later, he equalised 1–1 againstFulham in the League Cup quarter-finals and later converted hispenalty shootout attempt, but the opposition advanced with a 7–6 victory.[18]
As Calvert-Lewin was sidelined with a thigh injury, Beto enjoyed a run in the team as starter and made the most of it.[19][7] On 12 February 2025, he put Everton ahead 1–0 in the 11th minute of theMerseyside derby againstLiverpool, in an eventual 2–2 home draw.[20][21]
In October 2022, Beto was named in a preliminaryPortugal 55-man squad for the2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.[22] Two years later, he accepted an offer fromGuinea-Bissau managerLuís Boa Morte to represent their national team.[23] He won his firstcap on 11 October, in a 1–0 away loss toMali for the2025 Africa Cup of Nationsqualifiers.[24] He scored his first goal on 19 November, equalising an eventual 2–1 home defeat againstMozambique in the same stage.[25]
Beto idolisedCameroon strikerSamuel Eto'o as a child, and signed his name as "Beto'o". He namedBeethoven's Ninth as his music to listen to before training.[2][26]
