Bessvatnet[2] is a glaciallake inVågå Municipality inInnlandet county,Norway. The 4.7-square-kilometre (1.8 sq mi) lake is located in theJotunheimen mountain range and also inside theJotunheimen National Park. The lake lies just east of the mountainBesshø. The lake Bessvatnet is known to everyone that has hiked theBesseggen ridge, as the narrow mountain ridge runs between the southern end of the dark blue lake Bessvatnet on one side of the ridge and the green lakeGjende lies below the other side of the ridge.[3]
Bessvatnet is named after the riverBessa. The name of the river is derived fromOld Norse wordbersi which means 'bear' thus the river name means 'Bear river'. The last element is the finite form ofvatn which means 'water' or 'lake'.[3]
