Bernd Westphal (born 30 September 1960) is a Germantrade unionist and politician of theSocial Democratic Party (SPD) who served as a member of theBundestag from the state ofLower Saxony from 2013 to 2025.
Westphal first became a member of the Bundestag in the2013 German federal election.[1] He was a member of the Committee for Economic Affairs and Energy and the Parliamentary Advisory Board on Sustainable Development.[2] He has been serving as his parliamentary group's spokesperson on economic affairs and energy since 2015.
In the negotiations to form acoalition government under the leadership ofChancellorAngela Merkel following the2017 federal elections, Westphal was part of the working group on energy, climate protection and the environment, led byArmin Laschet,Georg Nüßlein andBarbara Hendricks.
In the negotiations to form a so-calledtraffic light coalition of the SPD, theGreen Party and theFree Democratic Party (FDP) following the2021 federal elections, Westphal was part of his party's delegation in the working group on economic affairs, co-chaired byCarsten Schneider,Cem Özdemir andMichael Theurer.[3]
In July 2024, Westphal announced that he would not stand in the2025 federal elections but instead resign from active politics by the end of the parliamentary term.[4]
