Bernard Arthur Gordon Horsfall (20 November 1930 – 28 January 2013) was an English actor of stage and screen.

Early life

Horsfall was born inBishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, and educated atRugby School. He trained as an actor at theWebber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art.[1]

Career

Horsfall appeared in many television and film roles, including the title role inCampion (1959–1960),Pathfinders to Mars (1960), the second sequel toTarget Luna,Guns at Batasi (1964),[2]The Avengers (three episodes in 1966 and 1967),On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969),[3]Beasts, asSir Christopher Hatton in the 1971 BBC miniseriesElizabeth R,Enemy at the Door (ITV, 1978–1980),[4][5]Gandhi (1982),[6] an episode ofThe Jewel in the Crown (ITV, 1984),[7] the character Frankland inThe Hound of the Baskervilles (ITV, 1988),[8] and the characterBalliol inBraveheart (1995).[9] His other roles included portraying British barristerMelford Stevenson in a 1980Granada Television dramatisation of the 1955 case ofRuth Ellis.[10]

Horsfall made several guest appearances in theBBCscience fiction television seriesDoctor Who. His first was asLemuel Gulliver inThe Mind Robber (1968).[11] His other appearances were as aTime Lord inThe War Games (1969),[12] Taron inPlanet of the Daleks (1973),[13] and Chancellor Goth inThe Deadly Assassin (1976).[14] All four of these serials were directed byDavid Maloney. Many years later he returned toDoctor Who, appearing inDavros – aDoctor Who audio drama produced byBig Finish Productions.[15]

Horsfall also appeared, with a Swedish accent, as Christianson in an episode ofThe Persuaders! entitled "The Morning After" during 1972.[16]

Horsfall's stage work included performances atThe Old Vic, with theRoyal Shakespeare Company and at theNational Theatre.[1]

Death

Horsfall died on 28 January 2013, aged 82, on theIsle of Skye in Scotland.[1][17] He was survived by his wife Jane, their daughters Hannah and Rebecca, five grandchildren and his sister. His son Christian died in 2012.[1][18]
