Bernard Chazelle (born November 5, 1955) is a Frenchcomputer scientist. He is theEugene Higgins Professor of Computer Science atPrinceton University. Much of his work is incomputational geometry, where he is known for his study of algorithms, such aslinear-timetriangulation[2] of asimple polygon, as well as major complexity results, such aslower bound techniques based ondiscrepancy theory.[3] He is also known for his invention of thesoft heap data structure and the mostasymptotically efficient known deterministic algorithm for findingminimum spanning trees.[4]
Chazelle was born inClamart, France, the son of Marie-Claire (née Blanc) and Jean Chazelle.[citation needed] He grew up in Paris, France, where he received his bachelor's degree and master's degree inapplied mathematics at theÉcole des mines de Paris in 1977. Then, at the age of 21, he attendedYale University in the United States, where he received his PhD in computer science in 1980 under the supervision ofDavid P. Dobkin.[5]

Chazelle accepted professional appointments at institutions such asBrown,NEC,Xerox PARC, theInstitute for Advanced Study, and the Paris institutionsÉcole normale supérieure,École polytechnique,Inria, andCollège de France. He is a fellow of theACM, theAmerican Academy of Arts and Sciences, theJohn Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, andNEC, as well as a member of the European Academy of Sciences. He has also written essays about music and politics.[6]
Chazelle is married toCelia Chazelle. He is the father of directorDamien Chazelle, the youngest person in history to win anAcademy Award for Best Director, andAnna Chazelle, an entertainer.
