Benfeld (French pronunciation:[bɛnfɛld]ⓘ;Alsatian:Banfald[ˈbanfalt]) is a commune in theBas-Rhindepartment inGrand Est in northeasternFrance.[3] It is situated on the riverIll. In the nearby hamletEhl there is an archaeological site with the remains of theGallo-Roman cityEllelum orHelvetum.Benfeld station has rail connections to Strasbourg and Colmar.
The missionary to remote northernAustralia,Francis Xavier Gsell, was born in Benfeld in 1872.
