TheBenacenses were aGallic tribe dwelling west ofLake Garda during theRoman period.
They are mentioned asBenacens[es] on an inscription.[1][2]
The ethnic nameBenacenses appears to be derived from the ancient name ofLake Garda,Lacus Benacus. The latter probably stems from an earlier *benn-āko- (cf.OIr.bennach 'pointed, horned'), built on theGaulish stembenna- ('point, summit').[3][2]
The Bergalei lived on the western shore ofLake Garda (Lacus Benacus). Their territory was located west of theSabini,Edrani andStoeni, south of theTublinates, and west of theBelouni.[4]
Around 81–96 AD, they dedicated with theTrumplini a monument toJulia Flavia, the daughter of emperorTitus, in the Roman colony of Brixia (Brescia).[1]
