Playing career

[edit]

Strevens began his career atWingate & Finchley and in the 1998–99 season in theIsthmian League Division Three he scored 28 league goals coming joint second in the top scorers chart, helping the side to promotion. He was then signed byBarnet,[3] having scored 38 goals in 67 appearances for the Blues.[4]

He was then loaned out toSlough Town and then toSt Albans City,[5][6] before becoming a regular first team player for theBees. He made 41 appearances in2005–06 season for Barnet, by which point he was their longest serving player, but left the club at the end of the season, having scored 42 career goals for the club.[7]

He was the only player in the Barnet squad to be relegated to theConference National in2000–01 season, and then be re-promoted back into theFootball League in2004–05. He was picked up on free transfer byCrawley Town and scored his first goal for the club on his debut againstRushden & Diamonds.[8]

Strevens suffered a fractured cheek bone and damaged eye socket in Crawley's 3–2 defeat toLewes in anFA Cup game in 2006.[9]

He signed forDagenham & Redbridge in December 2006,[7] whom he was promoted with at the end of the2006–07 season intoLeague Two.[10] At the end of the 2008–09 season he signed for Brentford, along with Dagenham teammatesDanny Foster andSam Saunders.[11] He joinedWycombe Wanderers in 2010,[7] helping them to win promotion toLeague One in his first season, only to be relegated back toLeague Two the following year.[12] Strevens was then released by Wycombe in May 2012.[13] On 20 July 2012, Strevens signed a one-year deal at League Two clubGillingham.[14] He made his debut in aLeague Cup game on 14 August 2012, scoring his first professional goal for the club.[15] His first league goal came on 10 November away atPlymouth Argyle.[16]

After being made available for a free transfer from Gillingham byMartin Allen in January 2013,[17] Strevens signed forDagenham & Redbridge on the January 2013 transfer deadline day.[18] On 7 May 2013, he was released by the Daggers due to the expiry of his contract[19] and joinedConference South club Eastleigh. Strevens played an integral part in Eastleigh's championship winning team in his first year at the club and their first season atConference Premier level.[20]

He worked as player/assistant-manager under Chris Todd during the latter stages of the 2015–16 season and was caretaker manager for oneNational League match at Wrexham in August 2016, following Todd's departure and his replacement by Ronnie Moore.[20] Despite signing a further extension to his contract at the start of the 2016–17 season,[21] Strevens left Eastleigh by mutual agreement in September 2016 to rejoin his former managerRichard Hill atNational League South clubWhitehawk.[20]

After Hill left in November to joinAston Villa as a scout, Strevens was appointed temporary player/joint manager.[22] His first game in joint charge ended in a 4–4 draw, with Strevens having a last minute penalty saved byGosport Borough defender Brett Poate, who had taken over in goal with his keeper off injured.[23] After two more games, Strevens returned toEastleigh.[24]

Managerial career

[edit]

On 5 November 2018, Strevens was appointed as permanent manager ofEastleigh after a spell as caretaker manager.[25]

On 26 January 2022, Strevens left the club by mutual consent with the club sitting in 14th place.[26] His last match in charge was a 1–0 defeat toDover Athletic, the opposition's first victory in 364 days.[27]

On 10 March 2023, Strevens was appointed manager of his former club Dagenham & Redbridge.[28] He was awarded the National League Manager of the Month award for March 2024 having guided his side away from the relegation zone with an impressive run of form.[29] He left the club on 26 December 2024 after a poor run of results[30] left the Daggers five points above the relegation zone.[31]

In June 2025, Strevens returned toLuton Town in the role of Head of Academy Coaching, having previously coached with the club's youth sides prior to his appointment as Dagenham & Redbridge manager.[32]
