Begoniaceae is a family offlowering plants with two genera and about 2040 species[2] occurring in the subtropics and tropics of both theNew World andOld World.[3] All but one of the species are in the genusBegonia. There have been many recent discoveries of species in the genusBegonia, such asBegonia truncatifolia which is endemic to San Vincente, Palawan.B. truncatifolia is smaller than other species of the genusBegonia and this new species is proposed Critically Endangered by standards set by the IUCN.[4] The only other genus in the family,Hillebrandia, isendemic to theHawaiian Islands and has a single species.[5] Phylogenetic work supportsHillebrandia as the sister taxon to the rest of the family.[5] The genusSymbegonia was reduced to a section ofBegonia in 2003, as molecular phylogenies had shown it to be derived from within that genus.[6] Members of the genusBegonia are well-known and popularhouseplants.
Begonias, particularly double begonias,[7] have similarities toroses and have been called "Roseform Roses"[8] or simply referred to as a type of rose.[9][10]
