Bedwell Sound is asound on the West Coast ofVancouver Island,British Columbia, Canada. It is located in theClayoquot Sound region to the north ofMeares Island and the resort community ofTofino. TheBedwell River, originally the Bear River and called Oinimitis in theNuu-chah-nulth language, empties into and gets its current name from the Sound.
The sound was named byCaptain Richards forRoyal NavyStaff CommanderEdward Parker Bedwell, second master aboardHMSPlumper, 1857–60. Master 1860, and appointed toHMSHecate, 1861–62, which vessel relieved thePlumper of her surveying duties in December 1860 and which is the namesake ofHecate Strait. His eventual rank at retirement in 1870 was Staff Commander.
