Beccari's sheath-tailed bat (Emballonura beccarii) is a species ofsac-winged bat in the familyEmballonuridae.[2] It is found inNew Guinea and in some nearby islands in bothIndonesia andPapua New Guinea.
It wasdescribed as a new species in 1881 by German naturalistWilhelm Peters and Italian naturalistGiacomo Doria. Theeponym for thespecies name "beccari" isOdoardo Beccari, an Italianbotanist who conducted azoological research expedition on the island ofNew Guinea where the bat was first documented.[3]
It isnocturnal, roosting in sheltered places such as caves during the day. At night, it forages for its prey—insects—along forest streams, in dense forests, and in clearings.[1] Its range includes several islands ofIndonesia andPapua New Guinea. It has been documented from 0–1,500 m (0–4,921 ft) above sea level.[1]
It is currently evaluated asleast concern by theIUCN. Some populations may be threatened byoverharvesting forbushmeat.[1]
