
Beauce (French pronunciation:[bos]ⓘ) is anatural region in north-centralFrance, located between the riversSeine andLoire. It comprises theEure-et-Loir modern-daydepartment and parts ofLoiret,Essonne andLoir-et-Cher.
The region shared the history of theprovince ofOrléanais and the county ofChartres, which is its sole major city. Beauce is one of France's most productive agricultural areas.
The name derives fromLatinBelsia orBelsa, said byVirgilius Maro Grammaticus to be aGaulish word meaning "grass plain, cultivated plain."[1][2] It was formerly spelledLa Beausse.[3]
It is the setting ofÉmile Zola's novelLa Terre (The Earth).
