Bay Islands Sign Language, also known asFrench Harbour Sign Language, is an indigenousvillage sign language ofHonduras. It started in the village ofFrench Harbour on the island ofRoatán and spread to the neighbouring island ofGuanaja.
There is a high incidence ofUsher syndrome in French Harbour, which causes deafness and thenblindness as well later in life. Because of this, BISL has developed both visual andtactile modes.
