"Bastille Day" is a song by the Canadianrock bandRush; it is the opening track from their third album,Caress of Steel.[7] Like most Rush songs, the music was written byGeddy Lee andAlex Lifeson, and the lyrics byNeil Peart. The song uses thestorming of the Bastille, which began theFrench Revolution, as an allegory for revolutionary fervor needed in the struggle against tyrannical government.[citation needed]

Progressive metal bandDream Theater, originally known as "Majesty," took their original name from founding drummerMike Portnoy's description of the ending of "Bastille Day" as "majestic."[8]
