Basseri dialect (Persian: گویش باصری) is aPersian orSouthwestern Fars dialect spoken inFars province by theBasseri people.[1][2] It is part of theSouthwestern Iranian branch of theIndo-Iranian group ofIndo-European languages.[3][4] Basseri dialect consists of many exclusive Persian words withOld andMiddle Persian roots and lessArabicLoanwords, which is a consequence of living in the mountains,nomadism and less connection with urban Persians.[5]

Basseri dialect has 6vowels including /æ/ , /ɒ/ , /o/ , /e/ , /i/ , and /u:/; and also 2diphthongs including /ow/ and /ey/.[6]

Basseri Persian has 22consonants, in contrast with Iranian Persian with 23 consonants. In this dialect,/ʒ/ is merged into//.[7]

Distribution

Basseri dialect is spoken among the Basseries in centralFars province. Counties likeAbadeh,Eqlid,Pasargad,Jahrom,Marvdasht,Shiraz,Khorrambid,Larestan, andSarvestan are among the traditional living range of the Basseri.[8]
