TheBasa language, disambiguated asBasa-Benue, and also calledAbacha, Abatsa, ru-Basa, Rubassa, is aKainji language spoken in centralNigeria, in the vicinity ofBassa,Ankpa,Nasarawa,Gurara,Kwali andMakurdi.[1] Blench (2008) notes thatBasa-Makurdi,Basa-Gurara andBasa-Kwali are separate varieties fromBasa-Kwomu orBasa-Komo of Bassa, Ankpa and Nasarawa Local Government Areas and other Bassa speakers areBassa Nge (also known asBassa Nupe.

Basa speakers also often speak theIgala language, theEbira language or theNupe language.[1]

Dialects and distribution

  • Basa-Kwomu (Basa-Komo) dialect spoken in the states ofKogi andNasarawa in Bassa, Ankpa and Nasarawa Local Government Areas.
  • Basa-Makurdi dialect spoken in the state ofBenue in Makurdi Local Government Area.
  • Basa-Gurara dialect spoken in the state ofNiger in Gurara Local Government Area
  • Basa-Kwali dialect spoken in theFederal Capital Territory in Kwali Local Government Area.
  • Bassa Nge (Bassa Nupe) dialect spoken in Kogi State and Niger State by theBassa Nge people who also speak the Tako dialect of theNupe language.
