Bart Lootsma (born 1957 inAmsterdam,Netherlands) studiedarchitecture at theEindhoven University of Technology during 1975–1984. He is ahistorian, critic, andcurator in the fields of architecture, design, and fine arts. He holds the chair forarchitectural theory at theLeopold-Franzens University of Innsbruck and is also professor at the Institute for History, Theory and Critic in Architecture at theAcademy of Applied Arts in Vienna.
As head of research, Lootsma worked at theETH Zurich and led research projects at theBerlage Institute in Amsterdam andRotterdam. He has also been appointed visiting professor at theAcademy of Fine Arts Nuremberg and at theUniversity of Applied Arts in Vienna. Additionally, he was director of the Department for 3D-Design at theArnhem Academy of Art and Design.
Lootsma also taught several courses in architecture, design, and fine arts at different academies of Art and Architecture in the Netherlands. He was editor for numerous journals such asForum,ARCHIS,de Architect, andGAM and has acted as guest curator forArchiLab 2004 inOrléans The Naked City and curator at the Schneider-Forberg Foundation in Munich. Lootsma’s work has appeared in many journals, such asDOMUS,Archplus,l'Architecture d'Aujourd'hui andA+U.
Moreover, he was member of several state and municipal committees, such as the Planning Board Arnhem and served on theRotterdam Cultural Council and the Fund forApplied Arts,Design, andArchitecture. Previously, theDutch Queen appointed him Crown Member of theDutch Culture Council.
The work of Bart Lootsma has been released in many publications, includingMedia and Architecture in collaboration with Dich Rijken (1998), his internationally known bookSuperDutch (2002), mostly dealing with Dutch Architecture, andArchiLab 2004: The Naked City, which was widely published in 2004.
