Barry Moser (born 1940)[1] is an American visual artist and educator, known as aprintmaker specializing in wood engravings, and an illustrator of numerous works of literature.[2] He is also the owner and operator of the Pennyroyal Press, an engraving and small book publisher founded in 1970.[1]

Early life and education

Moser was born in 1940 inChattanooga, Tennessee.[3] Moser studied at theBaylor School,Auburn University, and theUniversity of Tennessee at Chattanooga,[4] and did graduate work at theUniversity of Massachusetts Amherst. He studied printmaking withLeonard Baskin.[5][6]

Career

Moser is known for his illustrations forLewis Carroll'sAlice's Adventures in Wonderland andThrough the Looking-Glass, each of which consisted of more than a hundred prints, and the former of which won him theNational Book Award for design and illustration in 1983.[7] He has illustrated nearly 300 other works as well, including portions of theTime Life book seriesThe Enchanted World,A River Runs Through It, andMoby-Dick. He published his own illustrated Bible edition,[3] and he illustrated theAllen Mandelbaum translation ofDante'sInferno, published in 1980 asInferno: First Book of the Divine Comedy.

He has been on the faculty of the Department of Illustration Studies at theRhode Island School of Design and was also on the faculty of theWilliston Northampton School for many years. He is Professor in Residence and Printer to the College atSmith College. Barry Moser also teaches Life Drawing at the Glen East Workshop, held in summers in thePioneer Valley ofMassachusetts.

His works have been displayed in such places as theBritish Museum, theMetropolitan Museum,Harvard University, and theLibrary of Congress.

In 2007 the Smithsonian Art Collectors Program commissioned Moser to create a print for their Small Treasures series, the sales of which benefit educational and cultural programs through the Smithsonian Associates. The resulting relief engraving,An Old Chestnut is on display in theS. Dillon Ripley Center in theNational Mall.
