Barkley Dam is a dam along theCumberland River inKentucky. Its construction along withKentucky Dam formed theLand Between the Lakes National Recreation Area (LBLNRA) by stopping the flow of the Cumberland andTennessee Rivers, formingLake Barkley andKentucky Lake respectively. It is operated by theUnited States Army Corps of Engineers.
Barkley Dam is 157 feet (48 m) high and impounds a maximum of 2,082,000acre-feet (2.6cubic kilometers).[1] Completed in 1966, the dam and artificial lake were both named forU.S. Vice PresidentAlben Barkley.
Electricity from the dam is marketed by theSoutheastern Power Administration.[2]
