Village in Idlib, Syria
Banin, Idlib (Arabic :بنين ) is aSyrian village located inAriha Nahiyah inAriha District ,Idlib . According to theSyria Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS),Banin, Idlib had a population of 743 in the 2004 census.[ 1]
Banin has been heavily affected during theSyrian civil war , including by both repeatedSyrian /Russian airstrikes and clashes between moderate rebel factions andjihadist extremists.
By late 2012, the Banin had been captured bySyrian rebel forces. On 12 December 2012, theSyrian Air Force bombed the village.[ 2] fighters conducted airstrikes over the village.[ 3] Russian air campaign in Syria began,Russian Air Force Mi-24 helicopters droppedwhite phosphorus munitions on the village during the night,[ 4] [ 5] [ 6] Protocol on Incendiary Weapons prohibiting the use of the incendiary weapons against civilian areas. At least one man was killed in the strike. On 16 November, a Russian airstrike destroyed a bakery in the village.[ 7]
On 23 January 2017, moderate rebel groupSuqour al-Sham captured Banin from theSalafi jihadist groupal-Qaeda in Syria .[ 8] [ 9]
On 21 September 2017, a RussianKalibr submarine-launched ballistic missile struck Banin.[ 10] [ 11]
On 26 April 2019, anOTR-Tochka tactical ballistic missile carryingcluster munitions struck near arefugee camp near Banin, injuring several people.White Helmets inspected the remains of the missile.[ 12] [ 13] [ 14] Su-24 bomber launchedhigh-explosive missiles at the outskirts of the village in the midst ofongoing clashes 30 km away.[ 15] [ 16] [ 17] [ 18]
