Banda is anAustronesian language of theCentral Maluku subgroup. Along withKei, it is one of the two languages of theKei Islands in theIndonesian province ofMaluku.
Originally, the Banda language was spoken on theBanda Islands until theDutch military campaign in 1621, during which almost all indigenous inhabitants were killed, enslaved or exiled. Survivors of the campaign found refuge on the island ofKei Besar, where the language is still in active use in the villagesBanda Elat andBanda Eli.[2]
